Do you feel stuck in painful memories that you can’t seem to move past?

Are you haunted by flashbacks, nightmares, or body reactions that remind you of a difficult experience? Does it feel like no matter how much time has passed, your trauma is still impacting the way you live, think, and relate to others?

Maybe you find yourself avoiding certain places, people, or situations because they trigger overwhelming feelings. You might feel anxious, on edge, or shut down without fully understanding why. Even when you want to move forward, it may feel like your body and mind are still stuck in the past. Perhaps you’ve thought about starting therapy but worry that talking about your trauma will be too overwhelming.

Trauma Can Keep You Trapped In The Past

When you’ve been through something painful or frightening, your brain and body often hold onto that experience in ways that can make it hard to feel safe, calm, or connected. Trauma can cause intrusive memories, emotional numbness, irritability, or even physical symptoms that interfere with daily life. Left unprocessed, these responses can create a cycle of fear, avoidance, and distress.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based approach designed to help you reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer have the same painful impact. Through guided sets of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR allows your brain to integrate past experiences in a healthier way. Many people find that EMDR helps reduce the intensity of distressing memories, eases emotional triggers, and restores a sense of safety and control.

At Park Slope Therapy, our goal is to provide a supportive and compassionate space for you to heal. Together, we can use EMDR to help you move past trauma, reclaim your sense of self, and begin to feel more grounded and at peace in your daily life.

Trauma Is What Happens When Life Demands More Than We Can Bear

Millions of people live with the effects of trauma—whether from childhood experiences, relationships, accidents, or high-pressure environments. Trauma isn’t always obvious on the surface. Many people who carry it seem “fine” to the outside world, all while battling intrusive memories, anxiety, or a sense of disconnection that no one else can see. This makes trauma an incredibly isolating experience.

In New York City, where we practice, trauma often grows out of the relentless pace, high expectations, and lack of space to rest or feel safe. For some, it stems from difficult or unsafe past experiences that never fully healed. For others, the ongoing stress of being overworked and undervalued takes a toll on both body and mind. Without a chance to process what they’ve been through, many people end up feeling trapped in survival mode.

EMDR therapy provides a way to step out of that cycle. Instead of carrying painful experiences alone or trying to “push through,” EMDR helps you safely process and release what’s been weighing you down. With us, you don’t need to perform, achieve, or hold it all together—you’re free to show up as you are and begin healing at your own pace.

EMDR Therapy Can Help You Heal From Trauma And Feel Grounded And Whole Again

Trauma can be complex, layered, and insidious in the way it shows up. It has a way of staying beneath the surface until symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, or emotional numbness begin to interfere with your daily life. You might not even realize how much past experiences are affecting you until you feel stuck and unable to move forward.

This is why it’s so important to seek help. Trauma can keep you locked in survival mode, making it hard to feel safe, calm, or connected. Here at Park Slope Therapy, we use EMDR to help your brain and body process painful memories in a healthier way. By reprocessing trauma, you can release the weight of the past and reclaim a sense of peace, balance, and resilience in your life.

What To Expect In EMDR Counseling Sessions

EMDR provides a structured and supportive way to safely process trauma without having to relive every detail of what you’ve been through. In the early sessions, your therapist will focus on helping you feel safe and grounded, teaching you calming strategies, and preparing you for reprocessing. Once you’re ready, we’ll use guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer carry the same painful intensity.

The long-term goal of EMDR is to free you from the grip of past trauma so that you can live more fully in the present. As the weight of old memories lessens, you’ll be able to move through life with greater resilience, confidence, and peace.

Tailoring Your EMDR Treatment Plan

At Park Slope Therapy, we recognize that trauma affects everyone differently. That’s why we personalize EMDR to your unique needs and experiences. Sometimes trauma comes from a single event, while other times it stems from repeated stress or unsafe environments. EMDR can be adapted to meet you where you are, helping you rebuild a sense of safety, self-trust, and connection.

No matter how stuck or overwhelmed you feel right now, life does not have to continue this way. Trauma is not who you are—it’s something that happened to you. With the right support and the healing power of EMDR, you can begin to feel grounded, whole, and free again.

You May Have Some Questions About EMDR Therapy…

I’m not sure I’ve experienced “big trauma,” but I do feel stuck and overwhelmed. Can EMDR help?

Yes! Trauma isn’t only about one major event—it can also come from repeated stress, painful relationships, or experiences that left you feeling unsafe. Many people who benefit from EMDR don’t identify with having “capital T trauma.” If you feel weighed down by memories, triggers, or patterns you can’t shake, EMDR can help you move forward.

How long will it take before I notice a difference?

Every person’s healing journey is unique, but many clients report feeling some relief within the first few sessions. Early work often focuses on building safety and calming strategies, which can bring a sense of comfort right away. As processing unfolds, you and your therapist will track your progress together to determine what pace and length of therapy feel right for you.

Does EMDR work if I’m already in talk therapy or taking medication?

Absolutely. EMDR can be used alongside other therapies or medication. Some clients choose to combine EMDR with ongoing talk therapy for deeper support, while others use it as a stand-alone treatment. If you’re taking medication, EMDR can complement it by addressing the root of your distress rather than just the symptoms. We can also collaborate with your provider so you feel fully supported in every aspect of your care.

You Don’t Have To Carry Trauma Alone

Trauma often leaves people feeling isolated, stuck, or misunderstood. But you don’t have to keep holding the weight of the past by yourself.
