“How can therapy help with my anxiety and depression?”

Therapy for Anxiety

What is anxiety and how can therapy help? Anxiety is persistent worry about everyday situations that interferes with your day-to-day functioning. You might be thinking, “but haven’t we all felt anxiety at some point?” The short answer is, probably yes. Anxiety is something we all experience from time-to-time. A common experience of anxiety is feeling a flutter in your chest before a big presentation or before a job interview. That brief moment of anxiety likely went away right after your presentation or your job interview. However, anxiety can become problematic when it sticks around for longer and starts to interfere with your life. Similar to depression, there are physiological changes that can occur when you are feeling anxious. For example, you might experience a rapid heart rate, tension in your chest, or sweaty palms.

Therapy can help you manage your symptoms of anxiety so they don’t take over your life. There are different types of treatments for different types of anxiety disorders but you don’t have to have an “anxiety disorder” for therapy to help you. Therapy can be helpful whether you have an anxiety disorder (like Panic Disorder or Agoraphobia) or mild anxiety that does not meet criteria for an anxiety disorder.

Therapy for Depression

If you found your way here, you might be asking yourself “Do I need therapy?” “What is depression and how can therapy help?” Depression is a type of mood disorder that impacts the way you feel about yourself and your world. Common symptoms of depression that you might have heard of include loss of interest in your daily activities, loss of motivation, and sadness. However, the symptoms of depression aren’t always so obvious. Some people experience depression more physiologically which means that their symptoms might be more physical in nature (i.e. low sex drive, changes in appetite).

Even if you are not sure if what you’re experiencing is depression, you can still benefit from therapy. Therapy can help treat your symptoms and help you understand the root cause. One-on-one therapy can help you build new coping skills, manage your emotions, and address problems that might be contributing to your depression. Therapists at Park Slope Therapy are highly skilled at treating depression - in fact, it is one of the most common disorders we treat. There are different types of therapeutic interventions used to treat depression like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Interpersonal Therapy. You do not need to be physically in our office to benefit from therapy for depression - our Brooklyn therapists can treat depression over telehealth. This means that as long as you are located in New York State, you can see one of our depression specialists for treatment!
